Conasauga Falls

Conasauga Falls Tellico Plains Cherokee National Forest East Tennessee

Looking for an excuse to take a drive out of the city? If so, Conasauga Falls is the place for you.

Located near Tellico Plains, Tennessee, Conasauga Falls is a short hike through the southern part of the Cherokee National Forest.

This is one of the first waterfall hikes Max and I did in the Cherokee National Forest. In fact, the photos in this post were taken during a trip back in October 2019.

Preparing for Conasauga Falls

Unlike the previous Goofballs & Waterfalls stop at Cumberland Falls, you need to be a little prepared for this spot. Here are a couple of items to get you and your goofballs ready for this beautiful waterfall.

Road Less Traveled

It’s been a minute since Max and I hiked Conasauga Falls, so I decided to dig in to see how what other hikers have to say about the trail.

The good news is that the trail is exactly how I remember it. The bad news is that the road to get there has seen better days. You don’t need a 4×4 to get there; however, you don’t want to be driving a low riding car. There are a few washouts on the road, and if you’re car isn’t high enough, you could risk the chance of bottoming out. Just remember, it’s better to turn around than to get stuck somewhere without cell phone service.

I’ve wore these on the AT, Cumberland Trail, and spots in Iceland.
I highly recommend these waterproof bad boys!

Quick Elevation

It is a steep hike down to the waterfall. You will drop about 380 feet in elevation on the way down to the falls. The trail is an out and back, which means you’ll gain 380 hiking back to your parking spot.

Keep that in mind when packing for this hike. You may want to bring along some trekking poles for you and your goofballs. You will definitely need to take some extra water, plus some snacks to enjoy when you reach the falls.

Why Hike Conasauga Falls?

After trudging through the previous section, you may be asking yourself, “Why is Jeremy adding this hike to Goofballs and Waterfalls?” I don’t blame you in asking but trust me it’s worth it.

Short Distance

The total distance of the hike is less than a mile and a half. That’s a small price to pay for a great waterfall payoff at the bottom of the trail. Hiking the trail also provides some scenic photo opportunities, especially if you’re there during fall. The colorful foliage provides a nice backdrop while hiking and relaxing at the falls.

Hidden Gems

In addition to the hike, you and your goofballs have opportunities to discover other spots in the area.

Normally, I would suggest Bald River Falls, as it is a scenic spot. Unfortunately, as of this post (Nov. 2023), access to Bald River Falls is currently closed due to needed bridge construction. The construction is set to be completed by fall 2024. Even though Bald River is closed, you can still explore Citico Creek, which is another part of the Cherokee National Forest.

If you’re looking for food options, Tellico Grains Bakery and Benton’s Country Hams are two great places to visit and load up on quality food. The bakery makes different breads daily and you can stock up on ham, bacon, and other goodies at Benton’s.

Tellico Beach & Cherohala Skyway

After hiking Conasauga Falls, you can get a great meal at Tellico Beach Drive-In. This cool little place serves fantastic cheeseburgers and gives visitors the option to enjoy their meals on picnic tables located on the banks of the Tellico River.

If you’ve got the time, you can follow-up a visit to Tellico Beach by driving the Cherohala Skyway. This beautiful byway connects Tellico Plains, Tennessee to Robbinsville, North Carolina. Words and pictures cannot describe the breathtaking views you’ll see as you drive this 43-mile-long byway. Be sure to gas up before driving Cherohala as there are no gas stations and only 2 restrooms on the byway.

So, have you hiked Conasauga Falls? If so, would you recommend it? Better yet, have you been to Tellico Beach, and would you recommend a particular burger?
